Most of us have felt that notorious “butterflies in the stomach” sensation before making a presentation. We worry about what others will think of us, fear making a mistake, or fear our preparation has been inadequate. Those with severe fears about public speaking may also suffer from anxiety disorders, such as social anxiety disorder,, and their fears often begin in childhood or early adulthood. Public speaking anxiety or phobia is often linked to a variety of issues, including environmental, psychosocial, and biological factors. If you have previously had a negative experience with public speaking, you might be more likely to develop public speaking anxiety or a phobia later in life.
